Kerry first came to the Lubbock SBDC in 2017 to get assistance in starting a coffee shop. He discussed his business idea with Ray Laurent, and the SBDC obtained some market research for him. In 2018, Kerry decided instead to start roasting his own coffees and incorporated Tierras Planas Roasters, with a goal to produce the highest quality roasted coffee beans in the most sustainable manner. The business now offers coffees, teas, and other related products locally, but also wholesale as well as fundraising programs. Customers can also purchase Tierras Planas products online through an online shopping portal. During the pandemic, Kerry also obtained an SBA EIDL with the help of the Lubbock SBDC.
